How To Keep Your Home Safe This Winter

A residencial street covered in snow

Most regions in Ontario have strict bylaws about keeping your sidewalk clean, tidy, and safe during the winter. We have all walked down the street and carefully trudged through that one sidewalk that is constantly slippery and covered with snow and sludge. This winter make sure you are keeping your home and yourself safe during the winter!

Pretend that a huge storm is coming to your city – this is a guide of what you should do and some tips to help you ensure your sidewalk is not dangerous! Firstly, before you step outside your home always make sure you dress warmly and if you’re are getting ready to do a big shovel session, stretch your limbs and make sure your muscles are not tense. Boots are a necessity to shovel and you can get very inexpensive, waterproof boots at any large department or hardware store.

A common mistake many people make is that they let the snow pile up and try to do one major shovelling. Make sure that you shovel and clean your driveway and sidewalk in multiple session – not only is this a safer solution but it will end up being easier for you! If you know a storm is coming to your town apply salt and de-icers before the snow hits. Mineral salts can be purchased to be used and they will break bonds in ice and make shovelling easier. Rock salt is a cheaper alternative although it is harmful to pets, plants, and concrete. Calcium chloride is more efficient in colder temperatures and actually dissolves ice.

When you get read to shovel make sure your shovel is ergonomic and has a blade at the end – a sturdy shovel is fantastic investment to make sure you can take on the Ontario weather! When you shovel keep your knees bent and make sure you don’t have a full load or you may harm your back. If the shovel is not smoothly sliding through your driveway try spraying some cooking oil on the blade of the shovel.

Lastly, apply more salt on the driveway and the sidewalk which will make sure that your next session of shovelling is quick and efficient.

Shovelling may not be your favourite part of winter but it is a necessary aspect of being a responsible member of your community and making sure your home is safe! Make sure your sidewalks are clean, and not slippery this winter.
