Keep Insects Out This Summer!

Published on April 11, 2015

As the summer seasons rolls up on Ontarians, it’s the time of the year that pesky bugs and insects come out and make it their purpose to be a nuisance to you and your family. There are many natural options and tips and tricks that can be used to keep your home bug-free this summer! Here is our guide for our top 6 tips to scare the bugs away:

1. Bugs dislike lemony things

Seriously, bugs can’t stand citrusy smells and tastes! Some experts say that applying Lemon Eucalyptus Oil can be more effective than DEET! and keeps away deer tick bites and other insects. Lemon grass and citronella can also be bought in an oil form and rubbed directly on your skin which is a very efficient insect deterrent. Man insect-repellent scents have citronella infused into it as it has been used as a repellent for many years.

2. White Vinegar

If your home has an ant problem, try spraying some white vinegar in the path of the ants. The vinegar, alongside cinnamon prevents ants from entering your home. Make sure you test the repellent before you apply to your carpet or fabric to ensure it doesn’t damage your FINISHES.

3. Growing Herbs

Many natural herbs can be grown outside and act as a natural repellant such as lavender, basil, rosemary, cloves, and catnip. Just make sure that the herbs are maintained well and are additions to your garden.

4. Storing Your Leftovers

Bugs are attracted to specific things: humidity, and food are two big factors. Make sure that your home is clean and there is no loose food or dirty dishes lying around. With your leftovers stored away, there is less incentive for bugs to be in your home!

5. Professional Help

Sometimes you can’t fix everything yourself, and that is especially true with cases of termites and bed bugs which are best dealt with professional exterminators. These bugs can not only be dangerous but they cannot be dealt with, with most common repellents.

6. Retractable Screens

Any large opening is a gateway for insects to enter your home!
